Morocco has
four tanneries: that of Fez, the best known, that of Meknes, that of Marrakech
and finally that of Taroudant, the city with walls, which was briefly the
capital of the country under the Saadians. Let's enter the latter to penetrate
its mysteries.
The current
Taroudant tannery, replaced the old one 20 years ago, which had become too
dilapidated. It is located just outside the walls, a few dozen meters north of
Bab Targhount, it is found under the name Dar Debagh, house of a wholesale
leather seller.
Taroudant
has kept from its past the art of working the skin of sheep and goats according
to the oldest recipes. The tanners, who will gladly explain their work to you,
do not use any machines. All operations are done by force of arms
The skins
of Taroudant are transformed into handbags, Wallets, slippers, belts, even Davy Crockett
style leather jackets, which can be bought on site.
